  • Muscat 'La Petit Modat Amour', Domaine Modat, Cotes Catalanes, France - 2018

Concentrated nose of ripe yellow peach, vanilla, acacia and honeysuckle. The palate is immediately soft, luscious and oily and makes you think of peach melba yoghurt, mango and pear puree. There is gentle soft sweet spice (vanilla, cloves and cinnamon) on the finish, which goes on and on. Oily texture lingers. Cotes Catalan is possibly one of the most exciting and understated IGPs in the Languedoc and even in the whole of the South of France. Stretching from the base of the Pyrenees down to the Mediterranean coast it covers a range of Mediterranean terroirs surrounded by garrigue-covered hills and poor, dry soils. The hot climate, with low annual rainfall, ensures that the native varieties of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Rousanne, Viognier and Carignan ripen with concentration and power, whilst a fresh breeze up from the Med and down from the mountains ensures freshness and acidity. The pale Domaine de Torraccia Blanc from Corsica is pure Vermentino and has an evocative bouquet of wild Maquis herbs, an elegant, dry, mineral-edged palate and a long savoury finish. Seafood or asparagus are failsafe accompaniments. Veteran 'vigneron' Christian Imbert planted his organic vineyard in reclaimed scrubland in the hills above Porto Vecchio in 1966. At the time he was regarded as an ill-advised eccentric - today he is seen as a pioneering visionary. Grape: 100% Vermentino Alcohol: 12.5%

This white Vin de Pays de la Drôme is made from pure Viognier and offers fresh peach aromas and flavours and an elegant, dry finish. The Northern Rhône is the spiritual home of the Viognier grape. As recently as 1980 this grape variety was almost extinct, with less than 50 hectares surviving in and around Condrieu. Happily, since these dark days, plantings have increased significantly and, only 40 miles south of Condrieu (at the southerly limit of the Northern Rhône), Julien Montagnon makes a cracker. Grape: 100% Viognier Alcohol: 12.5%

    £27.00

Rich, decadent, but not heavy, this delicious white blend combines the sun-drenched stone fruit of the Midi with a seam of zest and minerality that lend an appetising, refreshing balance. The style is fascinating and unique – very much Châteauneuf viewed through the prism of burgundy. The flavours are of course those of Grenache (white or red), but structurally, in their combination of delicacy and power, there is more than a little of the Côte d’Or grand cru about these wines. Grape: Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Viognier, Marsanne Alcohol 14%

    £30.00
  • Zibibbo Amphora 'ZBO', Ricca Terra Farms, Brash Higgins, Riverland, Australia - 2019 (skin contact)

Intensely aromatic, with notes of apricots, elderflower and honey on the nose. This suggestion of sweetness, however, is false and on the palate, the wine is bone dry, with a bold tannic grip from the skin contact. Brash Higgins is the alias of Brad Hickey, a Chicago native with a serious wanderlust, whose career as a sommelier and food writer has taken him all over the world. Having spent years talking about and selling wine, the next step in the journey was to make it, landing him in McLaren Vale to work a vintage. It was here that the wanderer finally settled, marrying local vigneron Nicole Thorpe, with whom he developed his eponymous label. Using grapes from their own organic Omensetter Vineyard as well as fruit sourced from like-minded growers, they have crafted a range of wines which allow Brash’s experimental nature and pure instinct for flavour to shine through. Grape 100% Zibibbo Alcohol 13.2%

    £32.00
  • Macon-Cruzille 'Les Genievrieres" Domain Guillot-Broux, Maconnais, Burgundy - 2017

Yellow stone fruit and floral aromas prelude a velvety flavour of citrus and vibrant minerality with hints of spice complexity. Unique Mâcon style. The wine was made organically. The Chardonnay grapes were whole cluster pressed, without clarification, into barrels. Fermentation took place with native yeasts on the lees. Malolactic fermentation occurred in the barrel, during which the lees were stirred regularly, known as ‘bâtonnage’. This added complexity and texture to the wine. The use of oak was judiciously monitored, with the wine spending 11 months in old oak. Grape: Chardonnay 100% Alcohol: 13%

    £35.00
  • Pouilly-Fuisse, 'Mineralys', Domaine de Roncevaux, Burgundy - 2017

This example, from Domaine de Roncevaux, provides textbook notes of white peaches, backed by buttered brioche on the palate. Grape: Chardonnay Alcohol: 13.5%

    £36.50

The 25 year old vines are trained according to the simple Guyot method, with debudding and a green harvest taking place during the course of the year to attain a yield of 40 hectolitres per hectare. The soil is calcareous-clay-siderolithic, which is a red clay soil composed of limestone and rich in iron, a rarity in Cahors.
